High Potential Individual Visa Solicitors
If you are a recent graduate of a top global university and are considering a High Potential Individual Visa to work in the UK, our Solicitors, who have over 25 years of experience in UK immigration law, can help.
The High Potential Individual route is an unsponsored work visa for recent graduates of universities listed on the Home Office Global Universities List. Its requirements are set out in Appendix High Potential Individual of the Immigration Rules. The route does not require a job offer. Successful applicants can work for any employer, in any eligible role, without restriction on sector or occupation. The route is capped at 8,000 applications per year. Applicants must have been awarded a qualification equivalent to a UK bachelor’s degree or above from a qualifying university within a specified period before applying.
At Law Lane Solicitors, we advise graduates on the High Potential Individual route from our offices in Stratford, Holborn, and Croydon. We advise on eligibility, on the documentary requirements, on switching from other routes inside the UK, and on how the route interacts with settlement planning for those who intend to build a career in the UK.
Many applicants approach this route after working on a Skilled Worker Visa or a Graduate Visa and want to understand whether the High Potential Individual route gives them more flexibility. The answer depends on the applicant’s circumstances and the route they are already on. We advise on the comparison before any decision is made to apply, switch, or extend on a different route.

We advise on the following:

- Advising on the timing requirement and confirming whether the qualification was awarded within the period permitted by the rules.
- Preparing and submitting the visa application with a complete document bundle.
- Advising on the annual cap and whether timing considerations affect the application strategy.
- Advising on English language requirements and the evidence needed where these apply.
- Advising on maintenance funds and the financial requirements for applicants who have been in the UK for less than 12 months.
- Advising on switching to the High Potential Individual route from inside the UK, including from the Student and Graduate routes.
- Advising on work conditions under the High Potential Individual route, including what the applicant can and cannot do.
- Advising on extension applications where a further period of leave is available under the route.
- Advising on settlement planning for applicants who intend to remain in the UK after the High Potential Individual period expires.
- Advising on dependant applications for the partner and children of a High Potential Individual visa holder.
Why Choose Law Lane Solicitors for High Potential Individual Visa Advice?
The central eligibility question on this route is whether the applicant’s university appears on the Global Universities List for the correct year. The list is updated annually. A university that appears in one year may not appear in another. The relevant year is the year in which the qualification was awarded, not the year of application. We check the position carefully because an error at this stage produces a refusal that cannot be corrected by resubmission.
The route is unsponsored and allows broad freedom to work. That flexibility makes it attractive, but it does not automatically lead to settlement. Applicants who plan to remain in the UK long term need to consider their settlement route before the High Potential Individual period expires. In most cases, that means transitioning to the Skilled Worker route or another qualifying route before the leave runs out. We advise on that transition as part of the initial advice.
We also advise on the interaction between the High Potential Individual route and the 8,000 cap. Applicants who are eligible and ready to apply should not delay. We advise on timing and on submission once the application is prepared.

Frequently Asked Questions – High Potential Individual Visa
Who can apply for a High Potential Individual Visa?
The route is for graduates who have been awarded a qualification equivalent to a UK bachelor’s degree or above from a university listed on the Home Office Global Universities List. The qualification must have been awarded within five years before the date of application. The applicant must be aged 18 or over.
What is the Global Universities List?
The Global Universities List is a list of universities published by the Home Office that qualify applicants for the High Potential Individual route. The list is drawn from recognised international university rankings. A university must appear on the list for the year in which the qualification was awarded.
Does the visa require a job offer?
No, the High Potential Individual route does not require a job offer or a sponsoring employer. Successful applicants can seek work after arriving in the UK and can work for any employer in any eligible role without restriction.
Is there a cap on applications?
Yes, the route is capped at 8,000 applications per year. Once the cap is reached, no further applications are accepted until the following year. Applicants who are eligible and ready to apply should not delay unnecessarily.
What work can I do on this visa?
There are very few restrictions on work. The applicant can work in employed roles, take up self-employment, study, and do voluntary work. The main restrictions are on access to public funds.
What is the financial requirement?
Applicants who have been in the UK for fewer than 12 months must show they hold at least £1,270 in funds, held for a continuous period of 28 days before the date of application. Applicants who have been in the UK for 12 months or more are exempt from this requirement.
Can I switch to this route from inside the UK?
Yes, applicants on certain routes, including the Student Visa and Graduate Visa, can switch to the High Potential Individual route without leaving the UK. We advise on whether switching is possible based on the applicant’s current leave and whether the qualification and timing requirements are met.
How long does the visa last?
Leave is granted for two years for a bachelor’s degree equivalent or master’s degree equivalent, and for three years for a doctoral degree equivalent.
Can I settle in the UK on the High Potential Individual route?
The High Potential Individual route does not itself lead directly to settlement. Applicants who want to remain in the UK long term will usually need to transition to a route that does, such as the Skilled Worker route, before their leave expires. We advise on the settlement route options and the timing of any transition.
Can my family come with me?
Yes, partners and children under 18 can apply as dependants. The dependant must meet the relationship requirements set out in the Immigration Rules, and the main applicant must meet the financial requirements for dependants where applicable.
What English language evidence is needed?
Applicants who are nationals of certain countries or who hold qualifying qualifications taught in English may be exempt from providing a separate English language test. Where an exemption does not apply, an approved English language test at the required level must be provided.
How much does an initial consultation cost?
We offer a fixed-fee initial consultation. At that meeting, we confirm eligibility, advise on the documents required, and set out the cost of preparing and submitting the application. Please call or email to arrange a time.
